Dhaira to have public farewell at Nakivubo Stadium

There will be a public viewing of Dhaira's body at Nakivubo in Kampala.

KAMPALA - Ugandans will be able to pay their last respects to fallen Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Abel Dhaira at a public viewing in Kampala at Nakivubo Stadium on Monday.

His body arrived at Entebbe International Airport early Sunday morning aboard a Turkish Airways plane.

Dhaira, 28, succumbed to abdominal cancer last week in Iceland, where he was playing his club football at ÍBV.

New Vision understands that there will be a requiem mass at All Saints Church, Nakasero before his body is transported to his father's native Walukuba, Jinja.

The fallen Cranes Number One will then be buried in Mayuge, eastern Uganda on Wednesday.

Before kick-off of last Tuesday's Africa Nations Cup qualifier between Uganda and Burkina Faso at Namboole Stadium, players (wearing black arm-bands) and fans observed a minute of silence in tribute to the fallen custodian.

The return fixture of Group D, which ended goalless, was dedicated to Dhaira.

A win for Uganda, however, would have been the most worthy dedication to a young man who served well his country both at national and at club level.

But on a night of missed opportunities, particularly one in injury time by Moses Oloya, the Cranes failed to secure a home win against group leaders Burkina Faso.
