Ugandans are urged to plant rarer tree species that have been in existence for a long time.

Tree experts have warned that critically endangered tree species are likely to disappear in the near future if people do not plant more now.

Charles Ichogor is the director of Conserve Uganda, an organization based in Katakwi district.

He says that most people have forgotten some indigenous tree species - which are very useful to their livelihoods and survival - at the expense of new tree various like eucalyptus and pine trees, among others.

Cultural heritage, according to Ichogor, is eroding at the expense of this bio-diversity which is very critical.

He calls upon Ugandans to ensure that rarer tree species that have been in existence from time immemorial are planted besides the new species.

Meanwhile, in Serere district, Pingire sub-county has announced plans to plant trees when the rains return.

According to Michael Ongwara, the area LC3 chairperson, the project is aimed at combating global warming.

He says that the sub-county council resolved that each family should at least plant 20 eucalyptus trees and also 50 citrus fruit trees so as to gain economically when the fruit factory becomes operational.

Beehive and poultry keeping are other projects that the sub-county will get actively involved in, adds Ongwara.
