Speaking at St. Peters Cathedral in Soroti town during Easter prayers, Ecweru said that it was proper for him to come to church to thank God for saving him.

"I belong to the association called the survivors. When the tsunami hit cabinet on the 18th of February I managed to survive and it's against that background that I am here to praise God on the day Jesus Christ resurrected from the dead," Ecweru said amidst loud cheers from Christians.

In Teso, Ecweru is the only minister who was re-elected with three of his colleagues that include education minister Jessica Alupo, Rose Akol Okullu the minister for internal affairs and Teso affairs minister Christine Amongin Aporu losing.
