Kawuma Open Chess Championship
March 25-28th
Veteran chess player, Prof. Medi Kawuma has continued to support the sport in the country by sponsoring the third edition of the Kawuma Open Chess Championship.
In his absence, his son Patrick Kawuma announced sh4.2m towards the event at the press conference at Lugogo ahead of the four days event starting March 25-28 at Tick Hotel in Kawempe, Kampala.
The sponsorship is sh850,000 more than last year's deal and according to Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) boss Vianney Luggya, it will help provide an ideal opportunity for national team players to check their standing ahead of the international events this year.
"UCF is very grateful to have an individual come on board to boost the game. And besides the cash prize at stake for the winners, I feel it's also an ideal opportunity for our national team players to check their performances," Luggya said.
Kawuma is also expected to be among the top players set to battle against fellow national team players IM Arthur Ssegwanyi, Harold Wanyama, Walter Okas and Farouk Fauza among others in the open category.
While in the women's category, competition is likely to be amongst Goretti Angolikin, Grace Kigeni, Phiona Mutesi, Joyce Kabengano and Christine Namaganda.
The same players are also expected to represent the country at the Africa Individual and World Chess Olympiad slated for May and September in Kampala and Baku respectively.
