NDA to focus on drug abuse in NiE project

The National Drug Authority (NDA)'s main focus in this year's Newspapers in Education (NiE) will be on drug abuse and substance abuse.

This is the fifth year that the drug authority is partnering with the New Vision on the NiE project.

 "The purpose of this partnership was to improve on NDA's awareness levels and it targets young people in primary schools," Fredrick Ssekyana, the Head of Public Relations at NDA said after the occasion of the renewal of the contract between the two entities on Friday at NDA offices in Kampala.

 "The children who have been part of this project are playing a great role. They are impacting not only themselves, but even the parents around them."

Donna Kusemererwa, the new Executive Director of NDA said she is elated that the drug authority has continued in the rich vein.

"Our interest as NDA is that the concerns of the public are addressed, and what better way to do this through your various platforms."

Robert Kabushenga, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Vision Group hailed the partnership between the two institutions.

"Issues of drugs and self-prescription are prevalent in our society. We are happy to have an editorial collaboration where we can tap into your knowledge and information that you have to create an even greater public awareness," he said.

Dixon Ampumuza, Vision Group's Media in Education Advocacy Manager, said New Vision will do more than just supplying newspapers.

"Our biggest role in this partnership is to provide content and train teachers. This content will be on how to use drugs and how to fight substance abuse. We have lost many young people to drugs, while others are losing their futures."
