Massive cricket donation

"The players who are taken to camp will be trained for the Under 19 qualifiers that start next year."

Local cricket body UCA has set the 2016 schools cricket season rolling with a massive giveaway of equipment that was announced today at Lugogo.

The donation will see each of the 43 schools in UCA's development programme receive an assortment of equipment that includes three pairs of patting pads, three pairs of batting gloves, three pairs of thy guards, three ball guards, two helmets, one pair of keeping pads and soft balls.

The material will help schools get ready for the secondary schools cricket season, which is built around the two Schools Cricket Week tournaments.

UCA CEO Justine Ligyalingi revealed that in addition to the Cricket Weeks, inter-house schools' competitions will be started this year while the best young players in the country will be taken to training camp at the end of it all.

"The players who are taken to camp will be trained for the Under 19 qualifiers that start next year," added Ligyalingi (pictured above), who was speaking at the giveaway press conference.

The ceremony was also attended by students from Kololo SS, sports tutors from some of the benefiting schools, National Council of Sports official David Katende and cricket lifer David Kamanyi.

The equipment was received as a donation from Bankstown in Sydney, Australia, in the latest chapter of a hugely beneficial partnership for the UCA.

Twelve years ago, the manager of the U-19 Australia Cricket team took pity on the scantily-dressed Uganda side making its debut appearance at the U-19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh and decided to do fix the problem.

He struck an agreement with the UCA where he would solicit for equipment in Australia and donate it to the Uganda cricket association every year.
