What do Vice chancellors think of the new President of Uganda?

YOWERI Museveni was re-elected for the fifth time as President of Uganda. Since his manifesto offered a number of promises for the university sub-sector, what do university dons have to say about his re-election?

Professor Hannington Sengendo, who is the Vice Chancellor of Nkumba University says that the people of Uganda voted their President into power, and that, "There is no doubt that the elections reflected the voice of the people."

Just like many Ugandans, Sengendo has his expectations of the new government whose manifesto partly focuses on youth education and unemployment.

He adds that, "The Government must deal with the high rate of youth unemployment especially in urban areas. The education system should be geared towards ensuring that people leave university with hand-on skills so as to combat unemployment."

Sengendo emphasizes the use of Government programs like the Skilling Uganda programme, geared towards equipping students with practical skills which promote employment.

Meanwhile Kyambogo University's acting Vice Chancellor; Prof. Eli Katunguka says that, "It is good President Museveni won the race."

He says that he supported, "President Museveni in the race." "The decision has been made. He is our incoming new President again."

However, their remarks come at a time, after Museveni's opponent Amama Mbabazi petitioned the High Court over the polls. Mbabazi and six other candidates lost to President Yoweri Museveni in the February 18, elections this year.

Katunguka says that he looks forward to working with the Government in the promotion of higher education in the country.

He explains that, "I look forward to working with the government to ensure that skills are inculcated into students before they leave university."

Katunguka further notes that projects and schemes by Government like Skilling Uganda formed under business, vocational and technical education and training are what this country needs.

More so, Prof. Celestino Obua, the Vice Chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology; says that the education sector has tremendously improved under the NRM government.

 "Running Uganda is not an easy task. We need to appreciate what has been put in place. There has been improvement in the higher education sector and this cannot be ignored because it is a significant achievement," Obua acclaims.
