Former All Africa gold medalist Abdu Tebazalwa has launched a boxing talent development programme in Katwe slum.

The programme is part of the talent development programme for the Nsambya-based Scorpions Boxing Club.

The former bantam weight was a star of the club that produced renowned boxers including former national star Godfrey Wakabu and Peter ‘Boyz Boyz' Semo..

The programme is geared at actively engaging children and youth in the area especially in Katwe slum in the sport.

The former Sweden-based boxer says he was moved to start the boxing programme for the many children and youth in the area after seeing that many of them were not going to school.

 
"There are many children here who do not go to school. Involving them in boxing can help nurture their talent and keep them away from drug abuse," he says.

Over 100 children have registered for the project during the launch last weekend.

"I am very happy that this programme has got support from community leaders in the areas. I am very sure it will help keep away children from the street," added Tebazalwa who was part of the Ugandan team during the Sydney 2000 Olympics Games.

The area has Ugandan boxing largely thrives on disadvantaged youth around the slums of Kampala city.
