DP spokesperson Kenneth Paul Kakande calls upon Museveni to prevail over security organs to end the siege on Besigye

The Democratic Party (DP) has called on President Yoweri Museveni to restrain police from curtailing Dr. Kizza Besigye's freedom of movement.

Museveni defeated FDC's Besigye in the recently concluded February 18 presidential election.

Days before and after the elections have seen the opposition politician engage in constant running battles that have resulted into incarceration and house arrests.

Police say they have intelligence reports that the movements of Besigye, who contested the outcome of the election, are a plot to cause chaos through street protests.

The FDC stalwart on the other hand argues that the police siege has hampered his freedoms including petitioning against the results in the courts of law.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday, DP spokesperson Kenneth Paul Kakande called upon Museveni to prevail over security organs to end the siege on Besigye and the constant arrests.

"If Museveni's conscious is clear that he won the elections freely and fairly, then why doesn't he order police and the army to grant the man freedom after all, the victory is a popular one and can be defended in the courts of law," he said.

Museveni has on several occasions said that nobody will be given chance to disrupt peace and stability in the country.

Police has often maintained that Besigye is under preventive arrest because they are aware of intelligence reports that he (Besigye) intends to mobilize supporters to cause chaos.

Kakande also claimed that DP is yet to release a preliminary report based on forensic investigations, indicating that the information on the presidential result sheets posted by the Electoral Commission on its website don't match the results from many of the declaration forms from polling stations across the country.

However, EC spokesperson Paul Bukenya dispelled claims of altering election results, saying that if DP has proof, it should take the matter to the courts of law for redress.
