Road to Anfield rebranded

Mar 01, 2016

Corporate companies will pay sh1.5m to register a team while individuals will pay sh100,000 to be included in a team of seven-a-side.

The Standard Chartered Cup was launched Tuesday with news that there will be no regional qualifiers as the winners of the Uganda edition will be able to travel to Anfield for a fully-funded trip.

The battle will be between the Ugandan corporate clubs and individual teams, with the winner of the Road to Anfield Trophy having a chance to watch the match between Liverpool and Watford in the Executive box courtesy of Standard Chartered Bank.

Standard Chartered Bank head of brand, marketing and corporate affairs, Hellen Nangozi , said that the new changes were made possible after the Ugandan chapter requested that  they have a full team visit to Anfield after the trophy, following the failure of last year's champions Roofings to make it.

They lost to Kenya's Posta in the regional tournament that was held in Nairobi last year.

"We felt that with the regional event, we might not get a chance to have our supporters travel to Anfield so we requested and we were given a green light to see that the winners of the Ugandan Cup travel directly to Anfield," said Nangozi.

Forty teams are expected to battle in the Ugandan edition of the Cup that is set for April 9.

Their target is to see that their customers have fun and registration will be for both corporate and individual Standard Chartered Bank customers.

Corporate companies will pay sh1.5m to register a team while individuals will pay sh100,000 to be included in a team of seven-a-side, which will be named after the Liverpool legends.

"We need 40 teams and it is a first come, first serve process.  When we get 40 teams, we will close the registration," said Nangozi of the tournament that will be open to only amateur players, or those players that have spent three years without playing in competitive football that requires licensing by the national FA.

The bank's chief executive officer Herman Kasekende said that the offer is a reward for the royal customers who are passionate about football.

"It is a dream-come-true for all football lovers and it is an opportunity we will offer to the best players and customers. The only problem is that we have limited offers and that is why we have to compete to take the best.

"But even those who participate in the tournament will have a memorable fun event," said Kasekende.
