Peer educators mobilise youth for HIV testing

A group of peer educators clad in black t-shirts and jean trousers, with various sexual reproductive health materials braved there way to Jambula zone II, in Bwaise, Kawempe division to engage several youth groups in a campaign dubbed; 'Love Mukibanda'.

They were accompanied by a van with loud speakers blasting music which attracted many youth to participate in their campaign.

They also moved door to door distributing free condoms and sensitizing people on proper use condoms for protection.

The residents were also encouraged to test for HIV to know their status.

'Love Mukibanda' was organized by Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU) sponsored by MTV Base,UNESCO, Segal Foundation, Reutgers, Staying Alive, Women Deliver, Sexual Reproductive Health Rights(SRHR)and Uganda Health Marketing Group.  

The RAHU team leader, Humphrey Nabimanya said they wanted to show love beyond red roses and gifts to promote positive health choices among residents in the slum.

Later the residents were treated to free performances from known local artists like Geosteady, Van Data, Remah Nalumansi, Ray Signature, DJ Mark and local talents within the area.
 
During various performances, artists also encouraged people to go for HIV test and make informed choices for a better life.

The HIV counselling and testing services conducted by SRHR attracted 370 people.

The campaign was climaxed with an MTV drama titled; "Shuga", translated live in Luganda by a renowned VJ Marysmarts Matovu commonly known as 'VJ Junior' to easily drive the message.

The drama portrayed major SRHR themes such as HIV/AIDS, relationships, peer influence, love and sex.
