Man commits suicide over his wife's witchcraft

51 year old man commited suicide in Purongo sub county Nwoya district after a domestic misunderstanding with his wife.

The tragic incident happened on Monday at around 11am at Got Ngur village.

Akera Nighty, the wife of the deceased attributed the her husband Kitara Irish Otto's death to a row with her in which she was accused of practicing witchcraft against him.

She claimed her husband assaulted her and wanted to spear her which forced her to flee the home but when she returned home at around midday, he had committed suicide by hanging himself in their house.

Akera noted that her late husband in 2015 threatened to commits suicide four times but he had been saved by his relatives who always confiscated the poisonous drugs and ropes from him.

ASP Daniel Okello, the Acting Nwoya District Police Commander (DPC) explained that Kitara was the former LC3 Councilor for Paromo parish, former vice LC3 chairperson of Purongo Sub County and the current PTA chairperson of Bright Future International Nursery and Primary school.

Okello who led a team of Police detectives to the scene of crime said Kitara's death had been recorded under SD 11/15/02/2016. He added that the body was found hanging with a rope around his neck inside his grass thatched house.

Okello urged the communities with domestic problems to always learn to seeks psycho-social support and counseling from cultural, religious and elected leaders, police child and family protection units and health workers so that they are helped out on how to peacefully manage their domestic problems. 

He also appealed to the community not to take suicide threats lightly but to always report to local leaders and police so that lives are saved.
