Shops in downtown Kampala have been closed after Police had a clash with supporters of the main opposition presidential candidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye of FDC, whom police blocked from holdin rallies in the central business district of Kampala.

This prompted traders to close their shops as Police and military police personnel intensified patrols in the city. Besigye was briefly arrested and taken to Kira Road Police station from where Police drove him to his residence in Kasangati, Wakiso.

Besigye addressed a short press conference where he called for calm before embarking on a move towards the city centre where he is slated to address a rally.
