The rice carried a market value of between sh4.3b

A consignment of 1,225 tonnes of rice destined for Uganda have been sunk into the Indian Ocean at the Kenyan port of Kilindini in the Mombasa area after the owner failed to claim it.

The rice carried a market value of between sh4.3b and sh4.7b but was apparently unfit for consumption after a botched attempt to auction it according a statement by John Karimi Njiraini, the Kenya Revenue Authourity (KRA) Commissioner General.

Also destroyed were 18 containers of contraband sugar from Brazil for the Kenyan market, and 63 containers of ethanol which were seized in several Container Freight Stations (CFS).

Kenyan media estimate that the ethanol was valued at Ksh288m (Ush9.8b) and the sugar valued at Ksh56m (Ush1.9b).

"The rice consignment consists of cargo initially destined for Uganda, but whose owner (s) failed to claim it. The goods were condemned by KEBS (Kenya Bureau of Standards) as unfit for human consumption," Njiraini, said.
