Children to get free polio surgery

Some Ugandan children that were crippled by polio will soon undergo free corrective surgery with support from Narayan Sewa Sansthan - Uganda (NSS-U).This is the umbrella organization of the Indian Community in Uganda.

Rajesh Agrawal, president of NSS-U said the surgeries will mainly target children aged between three to fifteen years because their body tissues and bones are still soft and can easily be corrected.
 
The association plans to organize a polio diagnostic camp here in Kampala mid this year so as to find out the number of children that need the surgery.
 
"At the moment, we do not know how many children need this kind of surgery. The camp will help us come up with the number of children that need surgery. If they are more than ten, we can bring in experts from India to work on them from here. If they are less than ten, the surgery can be done from India," said Rajesh
 
 
He made the remarks during a meeting with the local Indian Community that was held at Arya Samaj Ground, Kisementi, Kampala on Sunday.
 
The surgery focuses on treatment of polio and by birth disability through corrective surgeries to help crawling patients to stand on their feet.
 
In 2008, Enock Byaruhanga, at the age of ten, became the first and only Ugandan to undergo corrective surgery in India.

Today, he stands straight and walks with the help of crutches unlike before when he used to crawl.
