SOROTI - The deputy NRM spokesman who also doubles as the director of Media center, Ofwono Opondo, has described the losers in the NRM party primaries who have insisted to contest as independents as greedy leaders that people should not take seriously.

He also made it clear that the President does not support independent candidates as it has been alleged by some people.

"The President associates with all because is still the President but that does not mean that he has given a blessing to independents who lost in the party primaries," explains Ofwono.

Over seven hundred NRM MPs lost in last year's primaries and majority has defied the party by running as independents.

Appearing on Vision Group's Etop Radio in Soroti on Tuesday, Ofwono stated that Independents failed in the party primaries because they were not in touch with the voters.

"It's because of greed that the NRM losers are not accepting to step down for the flag bearers," Ofwono said.

He wondered why an MP who has been in parliament for five years can be defeated by a new comer yet they had resources.

"You have been in parliament for five or ten years, then you say you have been cheated? Can't you have enough resources to enable you protect your votes from being cheated?" Ofwono asked.

It's against that background that some losers have gone to their constituencies alleging that they have got the President's backing yet it's not true.

"There is no way the President who is the chairman of the party can support an Independent yet there is a flag bearer," Ofwono said.

The party secretary general Kasule Lumumba recently said that the party does not recognize Independents including the ministers who lost.

About 12 ministers lost in the primaries and many have opted to contest as Independents.
