NCS commit to fund Atonet's full therapy

The surgery was partly subsidised by CoRSU Hospital as part of their offer towards Atonet’s treatment.

The National Council of Sports (NCS) will finish what they started after pledging to sponsor the rest of Elizabeth Atonet's post knee surgery therapy.

Acting NCS general secretary Nicholas Muramagi (right) confirmed the new offer in an interview with the New Vision on Monday afternoon, saying, "We shall complete the cycle of her treatment".

The NCS fully sponsored Atonet's surgery in November following an extensive media campaign on behalf of the She Cranes player, who had been neglected for months after tearing her left ACL in the build-up to the 2015 Netball World Cup.

The surgery was partly subsidised by CoRSU Hospital as part of their offer towards Atonet's treatment.

Following the operation, Atonet was advised to undergo a six-month rehabilitation period marked by weekly gym sessions and workouts with a qualified physiotherapist, which would require money she didn't have.

CoRSU paid for the first six weeks of Atonet's postsurgery physiotherapy but with the offer having expired last month, the player was stuck.

"I was worried because I don't have the money," Atonet told the New Vision. Atonet met with Muramagi at the NCS Lugogo offices on Monday and told him about her predicament and the sports guru immediately committed to intervene. "I am very relieved now." a jolly Atonet said after the NCS' move.

Muramagi explained that the NCS was compelled to step in, "Because she got injured while on national duty and wanted to send a message of encouragement to other national team players".

The NCS offer means Atonet will continue her physiotherapy at CoRSU hospital for the next four months while her gym sessions continue till July at a gym near her Nkumba home. The transport costs will also be catered for.
