Gov't to compensate Lakwena victims

“I am here to fulfill the President’s directive to make sure everyone who was affected by the war is compensated,” says PM Rugunda.

The Government is to compensate over 2,500 families who were affected during the Alice Lakwena war in Busoga region.

The Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, made the assurance while meeting the victims mid-this week at Iganga district headquarters.

Rugunda said people in the districts of Mayuge, Bugiri, Luuka and Iganga lost lives and animals during the Lakwena war as she attempted to launch an attack on the Government.

"I am here to fulfill the President's directive to make sure everyone who was affected by the war is compensated," Rugunda said.

He said a team from his office and the chief government valuer have been dispatched to the districts to establish how much property was destroyed.

He hailed the people of Busoga for halting the Lakwena rebels from advancing towards the central region.

"As the Government, we extend our condolences to the families of all people who lost their lives to these rebels."

The Third Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, Kirunda Kivenjinja, hailed the Government for the quick response to handle the issues.

Sam Bogere, 67, a resident of Muterere sub-county in Bugiri district said he has on several occasions asked relevant authorities to include him on the list of would be beneficiaries in vain.

However, the Premier assured the locals that evaluation of the people who were affected will be done fairly, to ensure that they are compensated.
