Starfish Aquatics Institute’s CEO, Leslie Donavan has underlined the need to include life saving skills on the local swimming curriculum in a bid to reduce the rate at which people drown worldwide.

Donavan from Chicago added that over 300,000 people drown annually according to World Health Organisation (WHO) and that the numbers need to be reduced or even stopped.

“Life survival skills are very important to everyone and therefore people should come out and learn some of these techniques for emergency purposes,” Donavan said as she related to the recent deaths of migrants who drowned as they crossed the Mediterranean Sea to Greece.
