Uganda trail Kenya at East Africa Golf Challenge

Kenya showed early intent of reclaiming the East African Golf Challenge when they took a one point lead after day one action at the 17th edition of the East African challenge at Kigali Golf Club Thursday.

Kenya showed early intent of reclaiming the East African Golf Challenge when they took a one point lead after day one action at the 17th edition of the East African challenge at Kigali Golf Club Thursday.

And to ensure their plan succeeds, they inflicted defeat on two of; champions Uganda's best players in Ronald Otile and Happy Robert.

Otile lost to Kenyan captain Bhavnish Chandaria 1UP while Happy Robert succumbed to John Karichu 2&1.

But despite the two losses champions Uganda are closely following on six points on the standings followed by host Rwanda who on 5 points.

Uganda's six points were registered by Andrew Byaruhanga who beat Ethiopia's Tesfaye Gabru 9up in one of the interesting results of the day.

Daniel Baguma also defeated another Ethiopian Cherkos Yitbarek, 7&5 while Ronald Rugumayo got the better of Rwanda's Celestine Habineza, 4&3, with Uganda captain Ronald Bukenya beating Tanzania's Isaac Wanyeche 2UP.

Herman Mutebi also had Tanzania's Victor Joseph for lunch with a 7&5 win, while Robert Oluba beat Francois Habimana of Rwanda 5&4.

Other wins for leaders Kenya were registered by Edwin Mudanyi, Justus Madoya, Agil Is Hag, and Paul Muchangi against Hagos Mulu (Ethiopia), Celestin Nsanzuwere (Rwanda), Francis Julius (Tanzania) and Binyan Gebreselasie (Ethiopia) respectively.

The competition continues Friday with the foursomes and four-ball rounds, before concluding with another singles round on Saturday ahead of the longest drive competition which will be preceded by the closing and awards ceremony.

Last year, Uganda (18.5pts) edged Kenya by a point to win the 16th edition of the competition at Entebbe Club.
