Ronnie Bukenya will captain the Uganda amateur national golf team as they head to Rwanda to defend the East African golf championships due at Kigali Golf Club, November 17-21.

The Mehta Golf Club member who was part of the team that won the annual championship at Entebbe Club last year, topped the latest team qualifiers with 12 points and over the weekend won the Entebbe Open.

Scratch player Bukenya, replaces Toro Club's Adolf Muhumuza who captained the team to the Zone V1 Africa Championship early this year, but whose form has dropped tremendously since that victory in April.

Muhumuza was also captain when Uganda finished second behind Kenya during the East African Community Golf Shield at Entebbe Club tournament last year and at the All Africa Golf Team Championships in Nairobi last month, where Uganda finished 5th.

Bukenya takes over the captaincy following a good season that has seen him winning three union events; the Tororo Open, the Kinyara Open and over the weekend, the Entebbe Open.

He leads a nine-man team that includes Andrew Byaruhanga, Adolf Muhumuza, Ronald Otile, Herman Deco Mutebi Daniel Baguma Happy Robert, Ronald Rugumayo and Robert Oluba, who will first compete in the Rwanda Open, starting today ahead of the East African Challenge, November 17-21.

Uganda won six games and drew one on the final day to win the 16th edition of the Challenge at Entebbe Club last year edging Kenya by a point.

This year's hosts Rwanda, finished third with Tanzania, Ethiopia and Rwanda finishing fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
