With berths for the World Half Marathon at stake in this year’s MTN Kampala Marathon, the competition is expected to be stiffer this year.

Most elite athletes are currently in earnest preparation in a bid to win fabulous cash awards in the annual event.

Besides the cash awards, many athletes will be vying for places in the national team that will represent the country at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships due in Cardiff, Wales on March 26, 2016.

For Police Athletics Club coach Benjamin Nja the MTN Marathon is very appetising.

“This is going to be a big race for us. We are taking it seriously and the whole team is in camp,” declared Nja.

Nja is among those pumping their athletes with endurance and speed at the high altitude on Mount Elgon slopes in Kapchorwa.

Nja who boasts of stars like Joshua Cheptegei, Isaac Kiprop, Joshua Chemutai and Stella Chesang promised to gun for nothing but victory.

“Everything is going according to plan. At the moment we are shifting to high gear in training. We defi nitely need to shine in this race,” he said yesterday.

The annual event that starts and ends at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds will have the proceeds channeled to help KCCA improve sanitation in public schools.

The event is organized by MTN and Uganda Athletics Federation in partnership with Uganda’s leading media house-New Vision, Huawei, Stanbic Bank and Rwenzori Water.
