Rugby coach Tolbert Onyango has got a task to restore the national rugby sevens team (Rugby Cranes 7s) past glory as he takes charge ahead of the Olympic qualifiers next month.

The team regrouped in preparation for the Olympic qualifiers next month in Johannesburg South Africa where the winner will qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

Onyango replaced Herbert Wafula who handled the team during the Safari Sevens tournament in Kenya early this month.

“Tolbert has always been the national 7s team coach but Wafula stepped in because Tolbert had left Uganda and was staying in Nairobi,” Uganda Rugby Union CEO Ramsey Olinga confirmed the development.

“Onyango was with the team in Nairobi during the Safari sevens rugby tournament and knows the areas to fix in the few remaining days,” according to Olinga.

Onyango returns to the team he coached in 2013 in the Confederation of Africa Rugby 7s (CAR 7s) tournament in Mombasa.

“The team is okay and we are working on our defence and fitness to enable us compete at the top level,” Onyango said on Tuesday.
