FIRE on Wednesday evening engulfed the 6th floor of Gaza Land, a shopping mall in the city centre causing panic among traders. 

 

No damage on the traders’ property was reported and there were no causalities.

 

Eye witnesses said the fire started at round 6:30p.m when employees of Ultra Chemicals tried to mix chlorine with unidentified reaction agents at the balcony of the 6th floor.

According to the LC1 Chairman of Zalampas Zone A, Paul Kabuye, the fire was quickly contained by Police before it could spread to the stores and shops belonging to traders.

 

He described the fire as “minor” adding that the damage was of little consequence to the shopping mall. 

 

Zanuni Nkwanga, the manager of Gaza Land confirmed that there were neither causalities nor “significant” damages.

 

“We had a fire incident on our premises. However, we took immediate steps and the situation has been contained. At this stage we have no information related to the cause of the fire and we await a police report. No trader has been injured and no significant damage has occurred to any assets of the traders” he said.
