International Master (IM) Arthur Ssegwanyi is confident ahead of his maiden appearance at the Chess World Cup starting Wednesday in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The 27 year old is the first chess player in East Africa to compete at the world stage ending on October 4. Ssegwanyi is not fazed. He is ready to outplay his opponent’s.

“It’s my first time at the world cup but all am sure of, is that everyone who qualified is a good player so I just need to concentrate and play my cards right,” Ssegwanyi said before he departed for Baku.

He earned a slot at the major event after winning the Zone 4.2 Chess championship that was hosted in Kampala in April this year.

The former national champion is seeded 125 out of 128 participants at the event and will start the campaign with a game against Dutch’s Grand Master (GM) Anish Giri seeded number four.

Giri is the fourth highest rated player with a rating of 2793 as compared to Uganda’s Ssegwanyi (rated 2357).

Ssegwanyi was flagged off by veteran chess player and outgoing RDC Kamuli District, Herman Ssentongo on Monday at the NCS offices at Lugogo.
