After winning their 16th inter region golf trophy at Kilembe Club last year, Western region team manager George Bagambisa promised to offer some of his players to other regions so that ‘they too can win something” this year.

He said then that Western, winning the Castle Lite Inter region championship had become monotonous ‘because there was no competition’ for his side in this annual tournament.

With this year’s tournament set to be played at Jinja Club starting Friday all eyes will be on the Western side who will “only use indigenous golfers from the west” as Bagambisa promised then.

The Northern region who missed last year’s tournament could be the immediate beneficiaries of Western region’s gesture.

Bagambisa’s organization and longtime planning will be put to the test by especially hosts Eastern who in Ashraf Bagalana, Baker Mwanja, Joel Basalaine and Sunday Lulet boost of some of the youngsters that can match the Western region cast, age wise.

Last year’s runners up Buganda will miss the services of Flavia Namakula, Brenda Ngabo and Irene Nakalembe but the experience of Gerald Kabuye, Joseph Mawejje, Henry Lujja and Sula Kisitu should inspire other members to push for a second trophy in four years.

Last year Western region won the title with youngsters Lawrence Muhenda, Adolf Muhumuza, Ronald Rugumayo, Dan Baguma, Titus Okwong, Peace Kabasweka and Ronald Otile leading their charge.

Each region is represented by twenty four players, four of which are ladies. The best twenty scores will count for each team. Competition is limited to players of handicap 18 (men) and 24 (ladies).
