LYANTONDE - A 50-year-old family man in Lyantonde district was on Wednesday attacked by unknown assailants who butchered him to death.

The gruesome incident occurred at around 5:30am at Kiyinda trading centre in Kaliro Sub-county, about 16km from Lyantonde town.

The deceased identified as Velino Kalitesi was dragged out of his house by the attackers before they hacked him several times to death with machetes.

His colleague Yosamu Mutungi, said they were called to Kalitesi’s home after the incident and found his body lying in a pool of blood.

His neighbours claim they never heard any alarm calling for help but were shocked to find him dead in the morning.

The killers went on and put a huge stone on the deceased’s head after severing his neck.

Fellow residents at the scene suspected the killers could have followed him from a local bar owned by a one Allen Kirabo.

The incident comes barely two days after a similar attack in Kisunku Village in Lwankoni Sub-county in Rakai district, in which a 21-year-old woman, Stella Kyomuhwezi, was killed and four other family members severely injured.

Kiyinda LC I chairman, George Niwamanya, said that the motive behind Kalitesi’s murder is still unclear.

He further explained that five people have been attacked and killed in different ways since the year began, adding that their appeals to have a police post in Kiyinda trading centre were overturned by district officials, RDC and the DPC.

Sadasi Katutuba, the Kiyinda Parish Chairperson, condemned the acts saying such incidents are increasingly happening in his area due to lack of enough a police post.

Police arrest three suspects

As a result, residents called police to the scene and a sniffer dog led them to Denis Byamukama’s home, who was later arrested together with two other people to help police with investigations.

Byamukama, 27, was arrested from his garden while harvesting as soon as the dog sniffed at him and started barking trying to attack him. His shirt contained big blood stains which prompted his arrerst.

Detectives also led him to the deceased’s home where they found his cap with blood stains.

Police also arrested Scovia Kyomuhendo, the deceased’s wife and Allen Kirabo, a local bar owner where Kalitesi had gone that fateful night.

Robert Tuhabwe, the Lyantonde District CID, confirmed the incident saying the attackers wanted Kalitesi’s life because they did not take anything from his house.

Tuhabwe told the New Vision that the deceased person was alone at the time of the attack because his children attend boarding schools while his wife, Scovia Kyomuhendo, abandoned him for his habitual drinking.

He added that they are still investigating the matter to establish the actual motive behind Kalitesi’s death.

He appealed to all residents to avail any useful information that will help in their investigations and also warned them against taking the law in their hands because the suspects are already in police custody.

He added that a file SD 09/25/06/2014 Lyantonde Police has been opened against Byamukama, Kirabo and Kyomuhendoare as inquiries continue.

He said that the suspects will be produced in court if found responsible for Kalitesi’s death.
