A 17-year-old boy who was shot by a police officer in Jinja is steadily improving.

The in charge of 3C ward, Allen Nakyobinga, said Francis Kibirige, a student of St Urusula disabled school has undergone several tests and the experts are managing the wounds.

“There is much improvement only that he cannot talk because he is dumb and deaf. We expect to do another chest X-ray and I think any time from now the boy will be discharged,” she said.

Kibirige was shot in the chest while another boy, Rashid Ntale, a primary seven pupil, was shot dead during the district secondary school’s athletics competitions at Bugembe stadium last week.

The two were shot by a policeman who fired live bullets to disperse students who had attacked a motorist.

Kibirige’s father Paul Musisi however called for legal action against a police officer who shot his son.

“I want to get hold of that officer who shot my son and face him in the courts of law, Kibirige is a disabled man and am still wondering why this happened. The police officer’s intention was to kill the boy but it is only God who saved him,” said Musisi.

The irate students many of them hardly in their teens, were hurling stones at a vehicle that had knocked one of their colleagues in the stadium.

On Monday the Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura, apologized for the unfortunate incident. He described the incident as unprofessional conduct by the officer.
