In yet another innovation, Vision Group, in conjunction with the Polish embassy, is rolling out a media-based environmental education for primary schools project.

Fully sponsored by the Polish embassy in Nairobi, the project will reach out to 20 primary schools nationwide. Under this partnership the Vision Group will supply 2,000 copies of the New Vision every week with environmental education content.

Speaking during the recent teachers’ workshop, Vision Group advocacy manager, Media in Education, Dixon Ampumuza, urged the teachers to embrace the project as an opportunity that will change not only their pupils, but transform their own lives also.

Under the partnership, each participating school will receive 100 copies of the New Vision every Wednesday for eight weeks during the school term.

The schools will use the Newspapers in Education (NiE) pullout to give pupils environmental conservation skills. As implementing partners, the schools are also expected to form environment clubs and get creative initiatives to share environmental conservation skills with their communities.

The training that attracted 40 teachers from the districts of Kampala, Masindi, Kanungu, Pallisa, Katakwi, Gulu, Arua, Lira districts, was held at the New Vision’s head offices in Kampala.

Vision Group’s NiE manager Jamesa Wagwau explained the pivotal role played by newspapers in environmental education and conservation.
