Uganda professional golfer Deo Akope’s ambitions of playing at the European Golf Challenge tour got on a wrong start when he failed to make the cut at the Zambia Sugar Open at the par 73 Lusaka Golf Club.

The open is part of the Sunshine tour with several tournaments in Africa and the Middle East.

Akope shot an opening round of 8-over-par 81 and followed it with 2-over-par 75 for a total of 156 to bow out.

Despite improving his second round game by six strokes, he was short of the cut-off point by 22 places.

Akope’s woes started in the opening round when he triple-bogeyed the 431-yard par 4 No.1, double-bogeyed the par-5 No.2 and followed it up with a bogey on the par-4 No.3.

Despite a par on No.4 and a birdie on the par-4 No.5 the competition never got easier for Uganda’s number one-MTN sponsored golfer.

He bogeyed No.6 and 9 to finish with seven-over-par 42 after the front nine. He played relatively better at the back nine with one birdie (No.10) but two bogeys (No.17 & 18) could not help matters.

The tournament is dominated by South African golfers who are in first top ten positions. Jared Harvey is on top with -8 going into the final two days of the over sh300m tournament.
