At this time eight seasons ago, the Nkumba Marines were on the way to their second successive national basketball championship.

But as Timothy Odeke’s charges prepare to face the KIU Titans in the National Basketball League today at the YMCA, they could not be further from the heady days of the Norman Blick era.

Nkumba University have significantly scaled back investment in the basketball programme, meaning the Marines are no longer capable of attracting a talismanic player like Blick.

The standards have been downhill since 2006 and this year appears on course to be the worst. The Marines have started the campaign with four heavy defeats and look early favourites to go under.

In KIU, the Marines face a side smarting from two successive defeats and the Titans should certainly bounce back.

In the women’s NBL, the rebuilding Makerere Sparks take on the KIU Rangers in another inter-university clash. It’s the day’s first game.
