WINNIE Nanyondo booked her place at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games team after clocking 2 minutes 1.92 seconds at the 800m women event at the Flanders Cup in Oordegem, Belgium on Saturday night.

The time was an improvement to her personal best of 2:02.23 which she ran at Namboole Stadium last month.

In her first international competition outside Uganda, after the World Junior championships in Barcelona, Spain, where she was a finalist, Nanyondo managed a fourth place finish at the games in the event won by Dutch runner Sanne Verstegen in 2:00.95.

The World Cross Country women gold medallist promised to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games and by beating the qualifying mark of 2 minutes 3.50 seconds shows that she can now concentrate on not only improving on the time, but also concentrate on how she will be able to beat athletes from neighbours Kenya to the podium.

In the race, she managed to keep with the leaders, at times dictating the pace till the last 200m where the strides of Verstegen and France’s Renelle Lamote proved too good for her in the sprint finish, which saw less than one second separating the top four athletes.

The athlete who is under Global Sports Communication is set to have a number of races as she prepares for the Commonwealth Games and her target is to run below the 2 minute mark and rewrite the national record.

The current record stands at 1:59.08 which was set by Annet Negesa at the Fanny Blanks Games in the Netherlands in 2012.
