Buganda Katikiro Peter Charles Mayiga is to visit Dubai on a fundraising drive for the reconstruction of Kasubi Tombs.

Mayiga who is to travel tomorrow (Wednesday) is expected to meet the Baganda and other wellwishers as part of his fundraising drive to raise money to reconstruct the tombs and “Masengere house” commonly known as Bulange Plaza.

“Some have been asking why don’t I stop collecting money, but we still have many things to do in the Kingdom. It is the people to support the Kingdom until it establishes its financial base. I will continue collect money in different places as long people invite me,” he said.

Katikiro wondered why people do not ask churches to stop collecting money from their followers. “I have never seen churches stop collecting money from us. I also give offerings every Sunday. Even at burial ceremonies and other functions they collect money and we never ask, because we know they need it,” he said.

Mayiga said more money is needed to replace what was destroyed in the past and revive the glory of the Kingdom.

“People give, because they love their Kabaka. I do not force them and the good thing everything is transparent. Every coin we collect goes directly to the Kingdom treasury and it is disbursed depending on the need and it has to be accounted for,” he said.

He said out of the Shs20b the government owes Buganda in rent arrears, only Shs2b has been paid. He noted that they have already collected over sh3bn for the fundraising drive which is working on Kasubi and Masengere.

He said they have a five-year strategic plan but decided to begin with key things including the protection of kinship, reconstruction of Kasubi and Wamala tombs, Masengere house, and rehabilitation of other tombs and cultural sites.

“We have also started on the construction of Masengere house and we still need more funds to accomplish this work,” the Katikiro said.

He said they also intend to increase the Kabaka Education Fund to increase on the number of bursaries for the needy children.

“Part of the money comes from people through selling certificates and other projects because the Kingdom has not yet established strong projects to sustain its financial needs. We are also trying to go into partnerships with various companies to boost our financial base. We thank those who have been supporting us,” Mayiga added.
