Ugandan designers set to earn big from Kampala fashion week intro

 

Why it hasn’t morphed into a multi-million venture for the extremely talented designers and models in the country. 

 

For such a competitive world, one would expect the country to have more fashion impact on the continent. I mean, to export another Stacy Queen Aamitto or two, or more, to the international fashion sphere.  

 

You might point to a horde of reasons but the actual reason has been lack of exposure to international markets and training because surely, the likes of Gloria Wavvamuno, Sylvia Owori, Latif, Ronnie Gun and the various renown designers undoubtedly possess a lot of exceptional talents.

And that’s why the Great lakes, an association that incorporates fashion gurus in the east African countries of Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania has partnered with the organizers of the New york fashion week to give a chance to the Ugandan designers to shine through the Kampala fashion intro that will be held on Saturday at Serena Hotel.

 

According to Joel Kanyamunyu, one of the directors at the Great lakes Arts Association, the LDG members are here to observe, support, enhance and cultivate the talent on display. 

 

He says “Models are the biggest product of any product but surprisingly, the country is not recognizing and using them as a vital tool to elevate the fashion industry of Uganda”.

 

To which Gloria Wavamuno, one of the designers who will be showcasing at the event, adds that “there is a flood of designers in Uganda with very creative minds and artistic designs but lack mentorship and people to tap them on the shoulders and usher them to the right direction and that’s exactly what the ones that are showcasing are going to get”. 

 

This they said at a press conference that was held at Serena yesterday. 

 

The designers to show case at the Kampala fashion intro event on Saturday include, Cynthia Munwangari from Burundi, who morphed from model to stylist and now designer,   Cynthia Rupari from Rwanda, Patrick Muhire from Rwanda , our very own Gloria Wavamuno among a horde of others that will come on board as the preparations will ensue.
