VP Ssekandi commends late Cardinal Nsubuga

The Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has commended the humble but focused service Cardinal Nsubuga rendered to the people, the church and the country.

Ssekandi said that late Emmanuel Cardinal Nsubuga emulated Jesus Christ as Good Samaritan and Good Shepherd by starting a home for the needy that has accommodated, treated and rehabilitated more than 5,000 Ugandans since its inception.

The Vice President was speaking at commemoration anniversaries to mark 124 of years Fr. Simeon Lourdel Mapeera and 23 years of Emmanuel Cardinal Nsubuga held at Mapeera Bakateyamba’s home in Nalukolongo.

The Vice President said that Emmanuel Cardinal Nsubuga served during trying times in the political history of the country but stood firm in guiding early post independent Governments to abide to rule of law, respect of human rights and justice for all Ugandans.

Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi with Monsignor Charles Kimbowa, senior seratary and notary for Kampala Archidiocese and Revered Father Francis Xavier and Revered Kaboggoza who are beneficiaries at the Mapeera Bakateyamba home of the poor at Nalukolongo.

Ssekandi reiterated that government takes pride in the provision of social-economic activities by faith-based organizations which have immensely impacted the welfare of Ugandans through socio-economic progammes like education, health and improved household earnings.

The Vice President who donated sh1m to the home in pledged Government support to ensure that vital social amenities like power, water, medicines and food are subsidized and promised to take up the matter with the relevant Government departments.
Kampala Archdiocese Bishop Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga said that the vision of Emmanuel Cardinal Nsubuga was selfless adding that the Bakateyamba home is a home to elderly people including priests, youth and women who have no relatives to care for them.

He added that the late Cardinal is also remembered for many other things including successfully inviting Pope Paul in 1969, as the first Pope to visit Africa and Uganda in particular.

The Administrator of Bakateyamba Home Sister Theresa Basemera, said that the home that begun in 1978 has been overstretched by limited space, feeding challenges and urged government to help the home acquire land for farming which will boost their food security and income.  

The function was also attended by Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria Archbishop Augustine Kassujja who was the main celebrant at the memorial mass.
