They call it the Naked-Mile. It has been banned.

Security at Makerere University has been ordered to immediately arrest any student found running around the campus naked.  The move follows the emergence and adoption of a culture during the culture week which involves students running around campus during the night code named the “Naked Mile”.

In a letter copied to all University and security officials the Dean of students of Makerere University Cyriaco Kabagambe warned  students involved in the "backward practice" to immediately stop it.

“We were informed that the practice was emphasized by Lumumba and Mitchel Hall and that some women halls of residence had also embraced the habit,” said Kabagambe.

A student attached to Lumumba who identified himself as Paul said they came up with the idea in March last year  but refuted allegations that they run naked.

“We put on boxers and vests though sometimes because of the excitement some of the students end up undressing,” Paul said.

Naked-run was once a popular sport in the Universities in the UK and the US where students were made to peel off their clothes and made to run naked. In the US, it is mainly used to get clothes for charity, and there it is the Nearly-Naked-Mile -not completely naked.

In Uganda such a tradition is associated with witchcraft.
