Mufti issues fatwa over ringtones

The Mufti of Uganda Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje has issued a Fatwa (Islamic legal pronouncement) banning ringtones in which the Holy Quran verses are recited.

He made the pronouncement on Saturday during the burial of Sheikh Ibrahim Dumba the former Sheikh in charge of Muslim prisoners in Ugandan Prisons at Naguru – Nakaseeta on Hoima road in Wakiso District.

The Mufti said according to the Islamic teaching in the Holy Quran, Muslims are required to pay maximum attention whenever verses are recited and not indulge in any disrespectful actions or behaviours.

He said that if people use the Quran recitation as a ringtone, they always interrupt it by either pressing the off button to reject the call or pressing the yes button to answer the call. This he noted is not acceptable let alone the fact that sometimes, the phones ring in places where Quran recitations are forbidden.

He referred his audience to Surat Al- A’raf (Quran 7:204) in which Allah says “When the Quran is read, listen to it with attention and hold your peace; that you may receive mercy”.
