A tenant in Kamwokya has been evicted over rent arrears of over sh165m.
Bailiffs stormed Kampala Premier Inn located at Kamwokya after the High Court granted Joseph Akol powers to evict rent defaulters from his building.
The defaulters, Innovative Masters Holding Group Limited were managing Kampala Premier Inn but had defaulted on accumulated rent arrears amounting to $66195 (sh165m).
Rugged young men are seen moving out property
A Swiss national, Michael Koester was the victim during the eviction when the mean looking bailiffs together with Police officers and rugged muscular men struck Tuesday afternoon.
Koester carries out his belongings during the eviction
Michael Koester , a teacher by profession works as volunteer in Web design and graphics at the Information Technology Centre for teachers in Africa (ITCTA).
He said he was shocked and frightened by the manner in which the guys stormed the Inn.
A visibly shaken Koester catches his breath
He said, “Right now it is a bit strange, I was scared and worried for about an hour. The head of eviction told me the proprietor of the Inn was not paying rent. He however later told me I was free to stay as another proprietor is taking it on.”
Michael noted that, “In my country (Switzerland) it is the same if you fail to pay rent, you are evicted. But not the way Uganda is doing it. You can see these tough guys just dumping and scattering property on the road and interfering with the traffic flow.
In my country court bailiffs use huge trucks to carry away properties of the evicted people instead dumping them on the road.”
A visibly shaken Michael said he is here for three months staying at a friend’s home.
