FOR anyone who doubts whether the Challengers deserve mention among the contenders for the 2014 Multiple Industries Cricket League Division 1, their start to the 50/50 overs season is food for thought.

The Challengers hammered the reeling Wanderers by 153 runs at Kyambogo, thanks to the peerless Arthur Kyobe, who needs to be reminded that the T20 season ended two weeks ago.

The merciless leftie smashed 119 off 112 balls to take full advantage of the vulnerable Wanderers, whose priority this season is to avoid relegation.

Hamu Kayondo, the glue holding the Wanderers together, put in a superb all-round performance with an unbeaten 83 and figures of 3/27.

Sadly for Kayondo, his brilliant individual performances are likely to be overshadowed by the collective shortcomings of the team.

Mohammed Shafeek added 38 runs for the Challengers, who though newly promoted have assembled a team aiming to win it all. They have already claimed the UCA T20 National League title, solid proof of their capacity.

If the Challengers are to win the title, they will have to go past Tornado B and probably Tornado. The two sister clubs met at Lugogo and it was Tornado B who won to take their winning streak over Tornado to three games.

Nicholas Kebba, Lawrence Sematimba and Roger Mukasa scored 55, 47 and 45 runs respectively as Tornado B (253 all out in 48.2 overs) won by 80 runs. Tornado were led by skipper Frank Nsubuga with 4/38 and Benjamin Musoke with 81 runs.

Charity were also winners, besting Nile by five wickets at Entebbe. Henry Senyondo was the chief architect of Charity’s success, taking an incredible 6/23 as Nile were bowled out 112 in 46 overs.

Senyondo then scored 34 off 32 as Charity chased down their target inside 20 overs. Martin Ondeko scored a team-best 36 for Nile.
