The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Democratic Party (DP) will sit in two weeks’ time to hear the deputy lord mayor Suleiman Kidandala's side of the story before judging him, the party’s press secretary, Fred Mwesigwa, has said.

He made the remarks at the party’s headquarters in Kampala while addressing journalists about the recently leaked tape recordings that indicated that Kidandala had met with the Police chief Gen Kale Kayihura to discuss the fate of his embattled boss Erias Lukwago at City hall.

Mwesigwa said NEC will thoroughly investigate the matter before reaching a final decision because “the party does not want Kidandala’s political career to be destroyed on baseless grounds”.

“We are working together with Lukwago on this matter. We want to accord him (Kidandala) a fair hearing before we can judge him. May be its politics or some people want to malice him; NEC will have to investigate this,” he said.

Lukwago over the weekend expressed shock at the recordings of his deputy, saying the latter owes him an explanation for meeting Kayihura without his knowledge.

Kidandala has since owned up to the recordings, but denies interacting with any other person in the recordings apart from Gen Kayihura.

He also denied asking for any amount of money in his interaction with Kayihura contending that the meeting with the police boss only discussed the cause of the impasse at Kampala city hall between Kampala executive director, Jennifer Musisi and the lord mayor and how it can be avoided.
