Uganda to field 38 swimmers for CANA

HOME advantage could be Uganda’s best weapon at the CANA Zone 3 and 4 swimming championships due April 24-27 at the Kampala Parents Swimming pool.

As hosts, Uganda will field the highest number of swimmers (38), selected from a pool of sixty, at the three day event which has attracted eleven countries. The numbers could play a part on who wins more medals and the overall championship.

Zambia will bring in 33 swimmers, Kenya 30, South Africa 24 while Angola will field 21 swimmers.

Tanzania have confirmed 18, Malawi 17, Burundi 11 while Mauritius and Rwanda will come with 15 each with Seychelles fielding only one entrant.

Zimbabwe and Namibia who had earlier shown interest in the annual event pulled out.

The three-day event on Saturday received further boost of sh20m from Mulwana Group of Companies.

The Nice House of Plastics, Jesa Farm and Uganda Batteries proprietors will provide T-shirts and track suits for the officials at the event. They will also provide branded Nice pens as the official pen of the tournament on top of providing milk for all swimmers at the event.

“We have made this offer because we believe in young people as the future of this sport and country so we contributed to support tomorrow’s generation,” Mulwana group communications officer Kyeyune said.

Mulwana Group joins, the Nabagereka, Ruparelia Group of Companies, GoTv, Midland Group, Davis and Shirtliff, Umeme, Centenary Bank, Sir Apollo Kaggwa schools and Gems Cambridge International School.

USF president Don Rukare was grateful for the offer saying, “We would like to see the event taking place successfully, our team is ready and we would like to see them putting up a commendable show,” Rukare remarked.
