Busoga is worst performing region in education

Busoga is the worst performing region in academics in Uganda, officials have said.

Luuka and Namayingo districts in Busoga region have for the three years registered the lowest Primary Leaving Education (PLE) pass rates in the country.

Speaking at a regional dialogue for Busoga Sub region on teenage pregnancy and early marriage, the commissioner Pre-primary and primary education, Daniel Nkaada said that 24% of the girls become pregnant before reaching their 18th birthday.

Nkaada expressed concern that most of the girls are from the Busoga region alone hence making Busoga with the highest rates teenage pregnancy and early marriages.

The National Study on Assessing Child Protection Safety and Security Issues for children in Uganda found out that  77% of the primary and 82 % of  secondary students had experienced sexual violence while 5.9% were subjected to defilement.

However the report shows that 24% of the teenage pregnancy, early marriages and defilement are by teachers.

Kamuli district chairman Salaamu Musumba called upon parents not to neglect their roles and responsibilities as far as education and parenting is concerned.

Children are carrying fellow children like dolls this is due to parents who sharing a room with their children hence doing what their parents do leading to early pregnancy, said Musumba.
