Sports leaders from across the country have been urged to start utilising sports events to help in the development of the game.

Uganda Olympic Committee president William Black made the call as he closed a sports and environment workshop that concluded Saturday at Emerald Hotel in Kampala. The workshop attracted sports leaders and other environmentalists across the country and was sponsored by the Olympic Solidarity.

“After listening to the leaders’ declaration of making a change by cleaning the stadium after sports events and trying to see that they also offer tree seedlings to participants in the different sports events.

“This is a good gesture but it should not remain in this hotel. We should go out and be practical. We need to do something about the environment and the good thing is that what you are saying to start are the basics that can be done with minimal funding. It is just a matter of changing people’s attitude. Let us stand out to be the example and others will follow,” said Blick before handing over certificates to the over 81 course attendants.

“Let us show the public that we can make a change and after, they will follow us. We have the power to attract masses and entertain them. Let us use this power to see that we can also make them change their attitude mostly with littering,” said Blick.

The chairman of the commission Richard Asimwe said they were looking forward to start a number of projects that will be able to promote the environment in the community.

“We are going to look forward for community based programmes mostly those with youth and the girl child. We want to link environmental protection with them as that is the only way we can be able to  develop and maintain a good environment for the feature.”

The workshop saw a number of talks about greening the country, sports facilities, non-motorised transport, brand building and media among others presented by different sports leaders.
