Up to 3000 more Sudanese refugees enter Uganda

Up to 3,000 more Sudanese refugees entered the country three days ago, bringing the total soc far to the 70,000 mark, the Uganda Red Cross Society has said.

Red Cross have registered a tootal of 70,000 refugees since tension broke out on December 15, 2013 in South Sudan following a coup attempt to overthrow President Salva Kir.

“The situation is still precarious and we still continue receiving refugees on daily basis,” Stephen Alatawa the operations manager of Uganda Red Cross Society based in Adjumani said.

The refugees crossed from Nimule up to Elegu border point.

The deputy commandant of Ayilo refugee camp, Johnson Okot said the camp is congested and they continue to receive more refugees.

The new refugees are relocated to Mungula new refugee site camp in Adjumani district.

Humanitarian agencies like United National High Commissioner for Refugees, Uganda Red Cross Society, World Food Programme, Oxam and others are providing interventions to alleviate the situations of refugees in Adjumani.

According to Uganda Red Cross Society officials 90% of the refugees are Dinkas and 60% of the total refugees are children.

Other refugees are resettled at Ayilo resettlement camp.

Uganda Red Cross Society has installed piped water using new technology with the help of Germany Red Cross and Norway Red cross.

Children were drinkingclean and safe water from the taps installed by Uganda Red Cross Society.

The agency also provides psychosocial support to the traumatized refugees
