Court dismisses AG bid to block Lukwago case

The Supreme Court has dismissed a bid by the Attorney General (AG) Peter Nyombi who had sought to block a petition at the Supreme Court case filed by Erias Lukwago who is seeking to be reinstated as Kampala Lord Mayor.

The Supreme Court has dismissed a bid by the Attorney General (AG) Peter Nyombi who had sought to block a petition at the Supreme Court case filed by Erias Lukwago who is seeking to be reinstated as Kampala Lord Mayor.
Sitting at the court in Kampala, the panel of five Justices gave their ruling, saying the AG’s preliminary objection lacked merit. The panel consisted of Galdino Okello, Benjamin Odoki, Esther Kisaakye, Wilson Tsekooko, and Christine Kitumba.
The Justices did not give reasons why they declined to grant the AG’s request. They said reasons would be given at a later date.
However, the status quo was maintained, meaning that the orders of Justice Kavuma are still in effect.
Court had convened to hear Lukwago’s application to overturn the March 31, 2014 orders of Justice Steven Kavuma of the Court of Appeal. Kavuma halted an earlier order of March 28 issued by Justice Lydia Mugambe of the High Court in Kampala, who had ordered that Lukwago return to office and resume duties.
Accordingly, hearing of Lukwago’s Supreme application is now scheduled for April 24.
On March 31, Justice Kavuma issued an order restraining Lukwago from performing functions as Lord Mayor of Kampala.
In Kavuma’s ruling, the High Court was ordered to halt hearing of cases relating to Lukwago’s removal from office.
