The Electoral Commission (EC) has set Thursday May 22 as the polling date for the Luweero Woman MP by-elections.

EC Chairperson Eng Badru Kiggundu made the pronouncement on Monday at EC offices in Kampala.

The seat fell vacant about three weeks ago when the Court of Appeal nullified the Democratic Party’s Brenda Nabukenya election.

The Court subsequently ordered a by-election upholding a decision of the High Court in Kampala.

Justice Vicent Zehurikize (now retired) on November 1, 2012 declared the seat vacant and ordered for fresh polls but Nabukenya petitioned the Court of Appeal challenging her rival, NRM’s Rebecca Nalwanga.

On the February 18, 2011 polls, Nalwanga polled 46,544 votes, Anna Kirabo and Elsie Namagembe polled 22,332 votes, and 14,663 votes respectively, while Lugudde (independent) was last with 4,741 votes.

However, in the by-election, Nabukenya won with 14,945 votes while Nalwanga polled 14,915 votes. Gwokyalya polled 3,775 votes, Asiimwe got 3,687 votes, and Namagambe polled 2,193, while Lugudde trailed with 191votes.
