BOMBO - The wives of Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldiers have been advised to embrace the Wazalendo Savings Scheme so they can access low interest loans.

Wazalendo general manager Pius Twimukye, says the spouses of UPDF soldiers ought to take advantage of the new products the army scheme has developed to boost their income-generating projects.

He said this at a training workshop for social development officers and spouses of UPDF soldiers from various units of the army at Bombo army general headquarters on Wednesday.

“We have developed the group members and agriculture loans. You should take advantage of the agriculture loans because this sector [agriculture] is broad and your husbands are too busy to engage in meaningful agriculture,” Twimukye told the women.

The training was aimed at preparing them for the NAADS inputs that the government has pledged to provide to wives of UPDF soldiers to support the income generating projects they have initiated.

Twimukye also mentioned that Wazalendo loans UPDF soldiers sh7b each month, and wondered if the wives were monitoring the expenditure of their husbands.

“We have sh58b in loans now. People in uniforms are moving on but you [wives] are not moving on.”
