Uganda settles for silver in higher weights

Hosts for the second World Islamic Weightlifting Championships, Uganda, found it difficult to win a gold medal in the higher weights and only pushed to silver in the tough 69 and 77 kg categories at Lugogo Indoor MTN Arena.

Hosts of the second World Islamic Weightlifting Championships, Uganda, found it difficult to win a gold medal in the higher weights and only pushed to silver in the tough 69 and 77 kg categories at Lugogo Indoor MTN Arena.
This was on Monday after Charles Ssekyaaya won a gold medal in snatch in the 62 kg category on Sunday.
Ssekyaaya did not only win the gold medal but also improved on his personal best from 262 to 264 kg.
Ismail Katamba won three silver medals at 232 kg (102 and 130 kg) a clear 48 kg below the gold winner.
Teammate Jamil Lubega leveled at bronze with 218 (95 and 123 kg).

The biggest battle was between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Libya in the 85 kg category where Uganda only managed a bronze by Khalid Batuusa with a total of 264 kg (117 and 147 kg in snatch and jerk respectively).
Gold winner Abdussalam Firaj from Libya won the category at 312 kg (140 and 174) and Al hamgen Khalil of Saudi Arabia picking the silver medal.
Action continue today (Tuesday) at Lugogo MTN Arena from 11:00 am with Godfrey Baligeya in the 105 kg category as the only Ugandan competitor on the platform.
“We failed on the gold yesterday but I have a lot of hope in Baligeya despite countries like Turkey, Libya and Saudi Arabia being very good in the high weights,” noted Ugandan team Coach Tom Senfuma.
Fahad Ali Al Qahtani from the royal embassy of Saudi Arabia, UOC president William Blick and Adel Consul the head of the Libyan mission awarded medals to the winners.
