Friday Night Lights

Quarterfinals

Sudi v Duxx

Ikong v Koma

Amoding v Enabu

Malinga v Blick (Live on Urban TV)

TEAM Malinga’s titanic clash with Team Blick is the selected match for live broadcast on Urban TV as the Friday Night Lights enter the knockout stages today at the YMCA.

But if it were possible, all four quarterfinal matches would be aired because they all promise to be pulsating. Remember FNL games are naturally frenetic so when there is an added incentive like avoiding elimination, it gets pretty frenzied.

By all accounts, today’s games are worthy of the occasion. None is easy to call, even Team Sudi’s meeting with Team Duxx.  Team Sudi may have come into the knockout stages as the only unbeaten team but Team Duxx are no pushovers, having ended Team Amoding’s own perfect record last week.

Team Duxx could decide to make it two for two against unbeaten teams.

Then there is the appetising clash between Team Ikong (two-time winners) and Team Koma (last year’s finalists), which pit two of FNL’s most popular stars in Joseph Ikong and Ben Komakech. Meanwhile, Team Amoding’s clash with Team Enabu is unpredictable to say the least, pitting the size of Maureen Amoding’s troops against the blistering pace of Ivan Enabu’s charges.

One thing is certain, it will be another fun night out for FNL’s dedicated fans, who have come in their droves every time for the last four years.

University Basketball League launched

Meanwhile, the official media launch of the Zuku University Basketball League (ZUBL) finally took place (yesterday at Lugogo), further signalling the intent of organisers. The launch had failed to materialise twice before, due to opposition from various quarters including some within university sports body NUSFU.

But the persistence of the ZUBL’s organisers, which led them to actually start the tournament on March 1, finally paid off and they used the press conference to outline their impressive vision for the potentially massive annual tournament.

Besides the huge media crew, the occasion was attended by Ambrose Tashobya, president basketball governing body FUBA, Jasper Aligawesa, general secretary of the National Council of Sports, NUSFU vice president Vicent Kisenyi and ZUKU TV officials led by country manager Jared Makobo.

Tashobya said: “I am excited about the creation of university league. I think it is very important for the development of basketball in Uganda. It is something we have always wanted to do but we can’t do it as FUBA so we are happy that Zuku TV have teamed up NUSFU to develop this product.

“I am sure that in a few years we will talent coming through the university league that will boost the quality of basketball in the country”.
