Lady Rugby Cranes 7s team coach Anthony Kinene has appointed Helen Buteme as team captain for the Confederation Africa Rugby women 7s tournament due April 2-11 in Machakos, Kenya. Brenda Kayiyi will be Buteme’s deputy.
“We decided to have Buteme as team captain because of her experience and communication skills. She is also comfortable with all the other players on the team,” Kinene stated as he confirmed the development.
Buteme, one of the pioneers of women rugby in Uganda in 2003, joined the national 15s team in 2005 before playing for the national 7s side in 2007.
She captained Uganda at the 2009 Rugby 7s World Cup in Dubai and played for English Premiership team, Thurrock, as well as other clubs in Sweden, Norway, Netherlands and Dubai.
On the team condition Kinene said that the girls are responding well to training and that he has so far been impressed.
The Lady Cranes will battle Zimbabwe, Tunisia and Namibia in the group stages and must win at least two games to qualify for the knockout stages.
The other countries to be represented at the eight-team event include Madagascar, Senegal, South Africa and Kenya.
